Roads

Roads may be built in any walkable land room, forming continuous paths for walking and carts; regional routes still begin at exact facing boundary trailheads. An owner with one relevant practice may surface a usable road: a stone-paved highway costs 12 stone and 4 brick and uses masonry practice; a wetland boardwalk costs 8 wood and 6 planks, uses road-building practice, and is limited to marshland. A movement edge benefits only when both road endpoints are usable; the weaker surface controls. Highways use 60% travel time and 45% effort, boardwalks 75% time and 60% effort. Surfaces remain part of the ordinary road, weather with it, survive structural upgrades, and require normal maintenance when the road is worn. Shoreline bridges require roads at both facing outer shores and cost 4 planks and 2 stone per crossed water room. A local road selects land; mode:sea selects docks. Inland ponds cannot connect lands. A survey creates the first regional route; build a road at the new arrival point for the return journey. For existing neighbours, establish-route {direction} requires a road at both facing boundaries (or docks and your boat for sea routes), access permission, and completed travel labour. It moves you to the far end and opens a persistent connection. Surface bonuses never apply to sea travel. All three navigation intentions support earned automatic queues.
